Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the two calculator modes?
Add/Subtract Time works with pure durations — you enter two time values (e.g., 2 hours 30 minutes and 1 hour 45 minutes) and add or subtract them to get a combined total. Time from Date is for when you need a real-world result — pick an actual date and time, then add or subtract a duration to find the exact resulting date and time.
Can I subtract a larger time value from a smaller one?
In Add/Subtract Time mode, subtracting a larger value from a smaller one would produce a negative result, which isn't valid for a duration — the calculator will show an error. In Time from Date mode, subtracting any duration from a date is fine and simply gives you an earlier date and time.
How does the calculator handle values over 60 minutes or 24 hours?
The calculator automatically carries over any excess values. For example, 90 minutes is automatically converted to 1 hour and 30 minutes. You don't need to worry about normalizing your inputs — just enter the raw numbers and the result will be properly formatted.
What does "Total Hours" mean in the results?
Total Hours converts your entire result into a single decimal hour value. For example, 1 day, 6 hours, and 30 minutes would show as 30.50 total hours. This is useful for payroll calculations, billing, or any situation where you need a single continuous hour figure rather than a broken-down format.
Can I add more than two time values together?
The calculator handles two time blocks per calculation. To add multiple durations, simply calculate the first two, then use that result as your first input for the next calculation. For adding many time entries at once, check out our Average Time Calculator.
